Back pOrchEstra

10AM—Noon

Back pOrchEstra A Shelter-in-Place-inspired musical outfit …a small Singer-Songwriter combo befitting the newfound minimalism of the current times… going back to the basics… dishing out new original material and yet also some historic American Roots heirloom selections. Formed for the first time in the locked-down summer of 2020, uniting some stellar but lately idle players. They may well have not ever come together were it not for the pandemic. Live streaming episodes and live performances in safe, outdoor venues have taken place since as well as sessions in the Big-Pink-style living room recording facilities of Globe Records (as featured in the recent New Copasetics release).

Back pOrchEstra is Tim Eschliman (Etta James, Commander Cody, New Copasetics), Bowen Brown (John Lee Hooker, Tommy Castro, Rhythmtown-Jive), Candy Girard (Tanya Tucker, Clint Black and Jerry Garcia), Beau Beaullieu (California Honeydrops) and Jackson Allen (Narada). The album, “Voices in my Head,” has songs from all over the map… originals with 60s, 80s and 1920s roots, plus Roots Rock, Americana, country blues, Western Swing, Cajun, and New Orleans music… reworked classics by Hank Williams, Dan Hicks, Big Bill Broonzy, Bob Wills, Bobby Charles and Taj Mahal. Also appearing are Austin deLone (piano, Eggs Over Easy, Fab Thunderbirds), Jack Ohara (backing vocals, Eggs Over Easy), Vicki Randle (percussion, Dr. John, Mavis Staples, the Tonight Show Band) and Kathy Kennedy (backing vocals, Big Bang Beat). Medicine Ball Band

The San Francisco Medicine Ball is an eclectic Bay Area ensemble featuring a revolving line-up of all star entertainers brought together from all over the world by founder and bandleader David Sturdevant. Known for his unique pairings of award winning multi-instrumentalists and first class vocalists, David delivers danceable Americana, Jazz and R&B hits nightly without ever losing touch with a band that started playing for tips on the streets of San Francisco, in Union Square and along Fisherman’s Wharf. The Medicine Ball performs across the Bay and around the world, uniting audiences from all walks and interests with feel good music infused with the heart and soul of New Orleans.

The Medicine Ball is modular so adapting to venues grand and small serves them and their audiences well, allowing for a seamless transition from big stages, like the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens in San Jose to the more intimate, cool evening seaside restaurants, cafes and clubs of San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland and Sausalito. Never one to get comfortable, eager to mix and match on the fly, David changes the lineup as often as the band crosses Bay Area bridges – one night it’s the blazing saxes of Ylonda Nickell and Richard Howell with long time pal, trombonist and vocalist John Hunt. The next night David brings in vocalist and keyboardist extraordinaire Janice Maxie Reid, Blues Hall of Fame drummer/vocalist Larry Vann and Oakland’s own Terrie Odabi. Always just one phone call away, David invites Grammy Award winning violinist Mads Tolling and singer/songwriter Crystal Monee Hall, Chelle Jacques and Valeriana Quevedo for dancing room only shows all over the bay.

JAZZphoria is a contemporary octet led by tenor saxophonist/composer Jean Fineberg. The band’s original repertoire ranges from swing to bebop, funk, R&B, blues, salsa and reggae. Comprised of veteran musicians, JAZZphoria features an impressive four-woman horn section and a solid grooving rhythm section.
JAZZphoria’s arrangements recreate the powerful sound of a Jazz Orchestra. The ensemble’s name refers to that peak moment when everything is in sync and all the musicians are “in the zone.”

Bandleader Jean Fineberg has recorded on more than 50 albums, and her compositions have been performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, The Grammys and the Kennedy Center. The ensemble’s musicians have performed and/or recorded with Melba Liston, David Bowie, Laura Nyro, Andrea Bocelli, Cornell Dupree, Mo’fone and The Montclair Women’s Big Band.

Luv Bomb is a 9 piece R&B/soul/funk music cover band specializing in classics from the 60’s & 70’s including chestnuts from Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Sly & the Family Stone and more.

Luv Bomb was started by guitarist KC Cormack in 2014 as a way to play the classic soul songs from the 60’s that he loved so much. Finding kindred spirits early on in bassist Jonathan Barkin and keyboardist/singer Tommy Rude, Luv Bomb quickly established a following in the Bay Area. The addition of a horn section featuring SJ on saxophone and Adam Cath on trumpet expanded the lineup and gave us the smooth horn sounds that are so necessary for this music. The frontline is anchored by Marina Blue, Doc Robinson and Emma Jean Foster on lead vocals, and Zach Benton on drums gives the music the groove that will get everybody dancing!

Luv Bomb will entertain all from the Memorial Park stage after the conclusion of the 5K race from 12:30-2 PM so stick around after the race!
